It is 2 a.m. and we just got back from the opening choir concert held at a beautiful outdoor arena just outside Riga. Thousands of singers from Latvia and around the world performed folk and modern songs for over three hours. After the opening choir performance, we took the trolleybus back to Old Riga and it was filled with teenagers singing Latvian folk songs.

Reading her email, I promised myself to one day make it back to Latvia for this festival and experience for myself a confident patriotism that manifests itself not in flag-waving or sports-centric beat-downs, but in ages-old song and dance.

A Vidzeme region song festival was held at Diki in 1864, followed by one in Dobele in Kurzeme in 1870. And the gentlemen at the RLB wanted a national event to foster a sense of unity amongst Latvians.

There was a sense of competition - since Estonians and Baltic Germans had held song festivals in recent years, why couldn't Latvians do it too? Plus, there were financial pressures. The RLB had built a grand and expensive headquarters in central Riga. And a big event would be just the ticket to pay off the debt.

Latvians have been singing one of the world's richest collection of folk songs since ancient times. And our five-yearly Song Festivals gathering 15,000 voices on stage at once are amongst humanity's great musical events, included on the UNESCO cultural heritage list.

TL;DR: it's a bastardized version of a WWI battalion song, sung by the members of the Princess Patricia of Connaught's Canadian Light Infantry. Their "ric-a-dam-doo" features heavily in the song, which ends with:

The song addresses how adults use their kids as a helping hand, which remains true to this day. Few of us have escaped some form of labour in our childhoods. The lyrics also reveal how much kids and Latvians in general like to blow things out of proportion. Dakteris (doctor) rhymes with slakteris (slayer) and the singer is quick to give up on love and a future in the face of seemingly petty trauma.

This Latvian britpop anthem defined the alternative 90s, symbolizing the youthful maximalism of the first Post-Soviet generation that grew up in the cult Pulkvedis club in Vecrga. Finally, there were no more borders between East and West. The video is also an authentic slice of 90s Riga globalisation, even featuring the first local McDonalds. The band has undergone several reincarnations since then, but this song is still a live favourite at summer music festivals.

okay he actually explained it at a concert. steve tannen, the guy from the weepies, accidentally got on a spam list and got 500 emails a day. and he was so lonely at this time that sometimes he would actually read them. and he said they all had interesting subjects like 'STEVE!!!' and he would be like, yeah?? lol (he's so cute). so one said "RIGA GIRLS!!!!!!!! GO LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and he opened it and got a TON of porn. lol so but it's a beautiful song, he was able to explain loneliness in this interesting way based on a very odd story. i think the "riga girls are you sad?" part is just... so touching. fantastic band.

Riga is indeed the capitol of Latvia where it just so happens that prostitution is incredibly common and very cheap. So I always just related this song to that, almost a Holden Caufield moment where you just pay a prostitute to have someone to listen to you and pretend as if they cared.

yah thats exactly what steve tannen said at the show i went to and i heard that story. i love the song though, i think its just like so odd that i can find it relatable, and i think a lot of people can. as stupid as it sounds, relating average people to porn stars but you have to just think how lonely they are to do the things they do, and when he says "oh i wish i had someone."and that makes me sad cause i always thought the last line was "is your heart of gold like a hall? cause theres no one there at all." but i guess echo makes much more sense. rats

The song and dance festival is an outstanding cultural masterpiece of folklore that has survived the challenges of time. It has become an event of Latvian and international importance, gathering and uniting Latvians from all over the world, uniting generations and peoples.

A powerful movement grew out of the first song festival in 1873 with 1000 singers. About 40,000 participants are preparing for their contribution to the XXVII Song Festival and the XVII Dance Festival. More than 1600 groups in Latvia and over 100 groups abroad are expected to celebrate together.

What a wonderful article. I have always felt that there were enough publicity around the song festival traditions in the Baltic nations, particularly for the Latvian and Lithuanian festival. Very much looking forward to the next Latvian celebration in four years time. I read that the festival ground in Riga is being reconstructed in its entirety now.

The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation has preserved the historical evidence of the Song Festival, starting from the first regional song festival in Diki in 1864 to the 26th All Latvian Song Festival in Riga in 2018.
