I chose Linnaeus bookstore is because I couldn't think of a better place to show a visual story than in a place where so many different stories come together. A bookshop is a magical place where you can wander endlessly.
My name is Sarah-Dona Manev I work in Amsterdam as a photographer and visual artist. I studied Fine Arts at the Royal Academy in The Hague and at the Photography Academy in Amsterdam. I’ve made several photo series and installations around the subjects of non-places and human- facades. Most of my work can be placed within the broader theme of identity.
My latest work: 'Intermission'. A series of images that take you into a moment of stillness. This series was created by bringing performance and installation art together.
About the work
The visual artist Sarah-Dona Manev has been working on a project in which she visualises the dialogue between physical and inner space through photography, performance and video-art.
The latest work "Intermission" is a research into emptiness and silence.
The place of where this image is taken used to be the chapel of an old monastery. A place where silence has always been present. In recent months we have been confronted with a new form of silence and emptiness. Intermission stands for interrupting the normal. The chairs are covered and are therefore no longer functional objects. The performers are not dominantly present, they are just like the chairs in an passive state of being.
Due to the low contrasts in color and play of the light, it gives a dreamy image. Therefor you are sometimes not completely sure whether we look at reality or fiction. The sense of doubt between what is real and not real is something that we may all have felt in the past period.
