Red Thread of Fate.
My painting refers to a Japanese myth that appears as a legend in the whole of East Asia and
has its origins in China: The Red Thread of Fate. The red thread of fate connects two people
who are destined to meet. The thread is invisible and indestructible: a special bond which can
not be broken, regardless of place, time and circumstances. This connection will be given
concrete form through an encounter.
This painting forms the first painting in a series on Japanese mythology. I am happy to show
it at Krugerkamer, a warm place created by Wendy and Bas where all kind of people come
together. They host a pop-up bakery, ice cream shop and other events, and the space is also
for rent for individuals or companies to organize their own gatherings. At Krugerkamer I was
able to experience such an encounter myself.
-----
From a young age Japan has fascinated me endlessly, as well as the world of art. I hold a MA
in Japan Studies from the University of Leiden, with a specialization in Japanese Arts and
Media. Combining these interests, I work as an artist, Japanologist and public speaker. My
interest in Japan and Japanese visual culture is reflected in my paintings and drawings.
.My visual style is characterized by its bold (out)lines and flatness, inspired by manga, anime
and Japanese woodblock prints. The human figure often appears in my drawings and
paintings. I mainly work on paper with mixed media: aquarel, gouache, ecoline, acrylic paint,
markers and pencils.
Currently I am working on two series: Intimacy (watercolor paintings focusing on feelings of
intimacy and affection) and a series on Japanese mythology (gouache paintings referring to
Japanese folktales).
