Our Mission Statement
Congregation Temple Emanu-El endeavors to create a joyful atmosphere where children learn to cherish their Jewish heritage. Through active participation in Judaism and the joy of learning, students and their families will become comfortable with the traditional rituals and observances performed both in the synagogue and in the home. These practices will enable our youth to form a positive Jewish identity and a lifelong commitment to Torah , G_d and Klal Israel (the Jewish people).
Students will learn commitment to love of Torah (study), Avodah (worship), and Gimilut Hasadim (moral and spiritual justice).
The Religious School endeavors
1. to ensure a solid educational Jewish foundation for all students.
2. to encourage families and students to learn and grow in their knowledge and practice of Judaism.
3. to inspire love and inquisitiveness about Judaism, the Jewish community and the Jewish people.
Curriculum
The Jewish education of our children is an extremely important issue, especially in this age of assimilation. It is not meaningful to limit our children’s exposure only to Bat/Bar Mitzvah preparation, but to make this a life long commitment to our heritage. In order to adequately expose your children to all aspects of Jewish education, we provide the following components to our religious school programming, following the model of the USCJ Framework of Excellence Guidlines.
the teaching of Jewish ethical values
the teaching of the Hebrew language (oral and written)
the study of the ritual practices of Judaism
the teaching and the practice of mitzvot and halakhah
a basic knowledge of the Torah
teaching prayer and praying
strengthen the knowledge of Jewish and Israeli history
teaching concern for and identity with Israel and the Jewish people worldwide
Hours of Operation
School is held Wednesdays from 4:15 - 6:15 p.m. and Shabbat morning from 9:30 a.m. till noon.
Following graduation, our children are invited and encouraged to continue their involvement with their religious training through Rosh Hodesh and/or Hebrew Chai. Additional educational experiences are offered through the Sierra Nevada United Synagogue Youth (SNUSY), Kadima, and monthly classes with a Rabbi.
Membership Requirements:
A family with children in the religious school is expected to be faithfully supporting their synagogue with membership.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Requirements:
In accordance with guidelines established by our synagogue's ritual committee, candidates are required to attend a minimum of two years of religious school education prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. This is in addition to and separate from the training received to prepare the child for the honor of being called to the Torah on the day of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Inasmuch as a minimum of five years of religious instruction is recommended by our governing body the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, we strongly encourage families to enroll their children no later than first grade.
