Dorothy Jane Dennis was born June 16, 1840 in Pontotoc, Mississippi to William Taylor and Talitha Cumi Bankhead Dennis.
Early life was that of a young woman living on a wealthy plantation in the heart of the American South. In 1849, the Dennis family was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Dennis family moved to Utah in an unknown company in 1855. After their arrival, Dorothy married Franklin Daniel McGee in Salt Lake City, Utah. After their marriage, the McGee family moved to Lehi, Utah.
In 1856, the young couple welcomed their first child into the world. Unfortunately, the little girl had a bleeding heart and died in 1857. During this time, Franklin left Dorothy and never returned. Sometime after the girl's death, Dorothy moved to Provo and began helping David Pinkney Rainey and his wife as a nurse. David's wife Margaret was not recovering from her illness and told David to marry Dorothy. They were married on Feb 9, 1857 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Rainey family moved to Salem, Utah where David was called to be bishop of the area. They lived in Salem until 1860 when they were called to move to Cache Valley and help settle the area. They moved to Richmond that year.
After David died on Nov 9, 1888, Dorothy continued to live in Richmond, raising her 13 children, 4 of which were still living with her at the time of David's death.
Dorothy Jane Dennis died July 18, 1920 on Santa Barbara, California. She was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
