Brigham Pond was born June 9, 1853 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Stillman and Abigail Thorn Pond. Brigham is a Pioneer of Richmond. Brigham was the first President of Lewiston, Utah, aka the first Mayor of Lewiston.
Soon after Brigham was born, the Pond family moved to Richmond in 1860. In 1877, Brigham purchased some land in Lewiston, Idaho and moved his family to the small settlement.
When Brigham was in his early teenage years, he began his freighting outfit.2
In the 1880s, Brigham and his younger brothers Lewis, Joseph, and Martin purchased Alma U. Hobson's General Merchandise in Richmond, adding a location in Lewiston in 1889, the settlement's first general store.1.2 They renamed the business to Pond Bros. and operated until about 1893.2
"The time came as it surely would, for obvious reasons, that the partnership would be dissolved. According to Bertrand T. Pond, on a designated day, the four brothers met in his mother's home and during three hours time, from eight to eleven P.M., divided up $80,000.00 worth of property plus 300 head of cattle. And as the story goes, each one of the four was of the opinion that his portion was best of all."2
On April 16, 1904, Lewiston was incorporated. Brigham Pond was appointed the first President of Lewiston. During the month of April, the City Board had six meets in order to fill the necessary laws and requirements that the town needed.
"At this time there were no electric lights, no telephones, no city-owned buildings or property, no lumber or coal yards and very few houses. There was a very good prospect for the Sugar Factory to be built in Lewiston the next year, so with the hope of so many new things for the year 1905, people took new hope for the future."
During the four years Brigham occupied the office, he helped bring telephones to Lewiston, the Amalgamated Sugar Co., electricity, and a city jail designed by Joseph Monson. Brigham left office in 1908. 1.1
