The early life of Edward is unknown. At around the age of 23, Edward was employed to John Chittenden. While working for him, John informed Edward that some missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were preaching in Dover. Edward, along with John's sister Jane, attended the meeting. They were converted to the Church and were married soon after.
In 1853, while working on a pier and renting a home in Dover, the Kingsfords were approached by George Cooley to help get the family to the United States. They agreed, and on April 6, 1853, the Kingsford sailed on the Camillus from Liverpool. They landed in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 7, 1853. From New Orleans, they made their way to Keokuk, Iowa and joined the John Brown Company on July 1, 1853. While traveling across the plans, their son Thomas Ephraim Kingsford was born. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Oct 13, 1853.
From 1853-1855, the Kingsfords moved to Cottonwood Heights, Bountiful, and Payson, Utah in order for Edward to find work. After some time, they were able to secure land and a home.
In 1860, the Kingsfords, along with twenty other families, moved out of Payson to settle in Cache Valley. The Kingsfords settled in Franklin. They continued to live in Franklin until 1876 when they began the process of moving to Cove.
