Amelia Johanna Hansen was born Jan 29, 1862 in Copenhagen, Denmark to Jens and Christine Johansen Hansen. Amelia is a Pioneer of Richmond.
Around the time Amelia was born, her mother Christine had converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but her father did not accept the religion and forced Christine to stop participating in it. In 1865, her father died, and Christine took her family to Utah, arriving in 1866. Amelia was about 4 at this time.
Soon after their arrival to the Salt Lake Valley, the family moved to Richmond. Christine married Jonas Halvorsen soon after and adopted Amelia.
"My mother said her memories of her early childhood in Richmond were very vague, but she did remember the times when she and her sister, Annie, were herding sheep on the foothills in their bare feet. The sun was so hot and so was the sand. As the burning hot sand came up between their toes--they thought their feet would burn right off. Many times they would sit down and have a good cry, then wipe away their tears, and get up and go again. They gathered sage roots during the day to help out with the food for their evening meal."
Amelia Johanna Hansen married Daniel Gilbert on July 21, 1881 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They lived in Richmond up until 1886 when they moved to Fairview, Idaho.
Amelia Johanna Hansen died June 7, 1939 in Fairview, Idaho. She was buried in the Fairview, Idaho Cemetery.
