While working in a mill, John was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Soon after, John set sail to the United States in 1851 to live among the Saints.
Before his leave to Utah, John had fallen in love with Elizabeth Davies. They were baptized together, but only John had the means to go west. When he finally arrived in Utah, he began sending money back to Elizabeth and she was able to make it to Utah in Sep 1855. They were married on Oct 10, 1855.
The family moved to Brigham City, Utah in 1856, then moved south to Provo, Utah during the Utah War. After the conflict, the Hibbert family moved to Richmond where they lived until 1865 when they moved to Montpelier, Idaho.
