Ruth Susannah Comish was born on June 15, 1869 in Franklin, Idaho to John and Esther Elizabeth Stanford Comish. Ruth is a Pioneer of Cove.
When Ruth was six, the Comish family moved from Franklin, Idaho to Cove. When Ruth became older, she associated with the Larsen family, specifically Erastus Snow Larsen.
"How soon it was after that before I realized that Erastus Larsen was a man to whom I would trust my future and my heart, I didn't know. In looking back down the years, I think I must have always known it. He stands today as the representation of kindness and devotion, with a never-failing sense of humor, and the embodiment of honor."
Ruth married Erastus Sno Larsen on Feb 17, 1892 in Logan, Utah, and the couple stayed in Cove to raise their family. On Sep 11, 1902, Erastus died.
"It was so hard to bear, but I keep the promise I had given to God, and I gave him back—his body to the hills from whence he grew, but his soul unto the God who created him. And a week later, my baby, my son, was born. Willis Snow, I called him—and he was like his father—and was comfort unto me all the years to come.
"And I looked up unto the hills, but the strength came from God, and I worked on the ranch that we two had owned. I dug post holes, I put up fences. I milked the cows and carried the milk two blocks to be separated that it might be sold. I let out the alfalfa fields on shares. And in harvest time I worked out in the beet fields to support my family. And who can say that my husband did not work beside me, and that I did not feel his strength and his courage when the days were long and the work was heavy?"
"And so I worked—and God rewarded me, for my children grew up strong and fine and true."
Ruth continued to raise her children alone until they all became adults. Ruth remarried to a widower, David William Rainey on May 15, 1912 in Logan, Utah. They soon move away from Cove.
"And with these changes have come others also. Changes that have left a deep imprint upon my life, and set a seal upon my soul. While driving in a car at night, [we] were struck by a street car. We both were taken to the hospital—after weeks my husband died [Sep 7, 1934]—and again I was alone.
"For months I was in the hospital—and when with a few months, I had lost my husband, my son Owen, and my son-in-law [John E. Ellis]—and my health, I found courage gone, and I waited helplessly, grimly for the end, wondering in a benumbed way what else evil could happen.
"But again I seemed to look back down the stream of time, and from the hills I sense the courage fo pioneer heritage—and from my Father seems to come the message "Carry on" and with my life rededicated to the Lord—I lift up my head and serve."
Ruth Susannah Comish died on Aug 19, 1955 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
