Elizabeth Tabitha Luckock Mason was born Dec 28, 1826 in Birmingham, England to John and Mariah Brittle Mason. Elizabeth is a Pioneer of Richmond.
When Elizabeth was only four, her father died. Her mother began working and was able to make a great fortune. Elizabeth was put on a pedestal, expecting that she would be an essential English lady. She was not taught how to cook, clean, or care for many basic needs because her mother did not believe that she would need to know.1
In 1853, Elizabeth was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her family was bitter against the church. Her brother Wallis told her, "If you will not join that terrible church, I'll nver marry and will furnish you with everything you desire; but if you do, farewell." After her baptism, her family disowned her.1
Elizabeth moved in with another family of Saints and began working to get the money to move to the United States. On Feb 22, 1854, Elizabeth sailed from Liverpool on the Windermere and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 23. From there, Elizabeth made her way to Westport, Missouri, joining the Job Smith Company on June 7, 1854 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Se 23.2
Once in Salt Lake City, Elizabeth moved into the home of Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson and his wife. Leaders of the Church counseled Elizabeth to marry Henry John Jarvis as his second wife in the practice of polygamy, marrying in Salt Lake City, Utah on Jan 24, 1855. Church leaders counseled Henry not to purchase from merchants going to California, and after he did so, they excommunicated him. Bitter, Henry moved his family to Missouri and later left his relationship with Elizabeth and their two children.1
Elizabeth still wanted to live with the Saints. She married William Knoz Aitken on Sep 7, 1859 in Saint Louis, Missouri, and the family joined the Ansil P. Harmon Company on Aug 1, 1862, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on Oct 5.1
On Feb 25, 1864, William died. After some time of work, Elizabeth married Ariah Coates Brower on March 21, 1868 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Soon after, she moved to Richmond.1
Elizabeth and Ariah had one child together. After Ariah's death in 1884, Elizabeth continued to live in Richmond.1
Elizabeth Tabitha Luckock Mason died from cancer on July 29, 1901 in Lewiston, Utah. She was buried in the Richmond Cemetery. The Women's Exponent writes about Elizabeth's death,
"We recognize in her death the loss of a faithful and energetic mother to her family and one who had determination to educate them in adverse circumstances. We highly esteem her faithful and untiring labors and devotion to the interest of Zion which are worthy of imitation by her children and friends."3
