Joseph Hyrum Bateman was born March 7, 1853 in Cedar City, Utah to William and Sarah Anne Lavender Bateman. Joseph is a Pioneer of Richmond.
The Bateman family moved to Richmond sometime in 1864-1865. About two years later, William died while Joseph was young. Joseph did his best to help his mother and family service after the death. Joseph married Sylvia Amelia Glazier on Dec 28, 1876 in Richmond. The incident of why Joseph married Sylvia is the following:
"He used to tell about how he decided to get married. Evidently he had been 'keeping company' with grandma,... He said on night he slept cold. When he got up the next morning he said he wasn't going to sleep alone anymore. So he went over the grandmother's and asked her to marry him. They were married that day..."
Joseph and family lived in Richmond for some years before moving to Vernal, Utah in December of 1881.
Joseph Hyrum Bateman died April 8, 1936 in Vernal, Utah. He was buried in the Vernal Memorial Park.
