Newel Etherel Munk was born Dec 6, 1891 in Logan, Utah to Andrew George and Mary Christine Jorgensen Munk. Newel was a veteran of World War I.
"I was born in Logan... in a log cbin located at Fourth North and Main. It was the home of my mother's parents...
"...I distinclty remember the time I started school at Riverside, a one-room building."
Newel attended school in Riverside until high school, where he attended on the campus of Utah Agricultural College (USU). After graduation, Newel began working to gain an education in Dentistry. He attended school at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery at Chicago University.
"The third summer I remained in Chicago where I did parctical dental work in the inirmary. Credit for this work applied on my graduation requirements. As a result, I had enough credit to graduate at the end of the first sememster, but I still had to complete the theory. This game me extra time to spend in oral surgery and to assist freshmen sudents with anatomy. The money I received for this work helped pay my living expenses."
During this time, Newel was in a long-distance relationship with Sophronia Ione Reese. After Newel graduated in June of 1916, Newel and Ione were married on Dec 22, 1916 in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple. After their marriage, the two made their home in Richmond, where Newel purchased James Leo Shephard's dental office.
"Ione was teaching in the Smithfield Junior High when I enlisted in the Army Dental Crops. I was held on a reserve basis for about six months and then sent to Camp Oglethorpe in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
"...The Armistice was signed while I was in Tennessee. Shortly after, I was transferred to Hoboken, New Jersey, a designated shipping out point. From there I was assigned to Camp Mills Hospital on Long Island. On January 14, 1919, I asked to be discharged. My request was granted April 24, 1919. I was honorably discharged from the Detnal Corps and given transportation from Pennsylvania Station, New York, to Richmond, Utah."
Before his military service, Newel closed his dental office in Richmond. Once he returned, he began working with Oliver H. Budge and James Calderwood in their dental office in Logan, Utah and moved his family soon after. Newel Etherel Munk died April 22, 1985 in Logan, Utah. He was buried in the Logan Cemetery.
