Gerald Scott Ryan was born Aug 24, 1947 in Logan, Utah to Leo Grant and Ruth Jean Hutchison Ryan. Scott served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was tragically killed in action.
Gerald Scott Ryan was originally classified as 4-F, but because he wanted to serve, he was reclassified as A-1. He enlisted in the Army on March 14, 1967 and completed basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Scott was placed in the 199th Light Infantry Division, 7th Infantry, 3rd Battalion in the Vietnam War. During the night of Oct 19, 1967 near An Lộc, South Vietnam, Scott joined a night ambush mission to take the fight to the enemy and serve as an early warning to their base camp. It was him and five other men. They stationed themselves to ambush the enemy camp; however, the Vietnamese farmers were prepared for the ambush, and at 1:37 am, the ambush was in motion when they began to radio for help. By 1:58 am, radio contact was lost with the ambush team. All six members of the ambush were killed.
Gerald Scott Ryan was killed in action two months into his time in Vietnam on Oct 20, 1967. He was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
