After members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had established many strong settlements in the Utah Territory, the United States Government began to worry about the "Mormons." In 1857, US President James Buchanan sent out Colonel Albert S. Johnston to remove Church President Brigham Young as Governor.
President Young took the matter as a large overreaction. He called men to gather their weapons in preparation for war, even though war was never declared. Between July-Nov 1857, Johnston's army set outside the Salt Lake Valley while troops of the Nauvoo Legion in Utah prepared. The conflict peacefully ended as Johnston's army marched into Salt Lake City peacefully in April 1858 and President Young stepped down as Utah's governor. Not a single soul was lost during this "cold war."
