The Richmond South Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized on Jan 21, 1917 from the existing Richmond Ward. In a meeting held in Smithfield, Utah, George A. Smith and James E. Talmage of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles presided. James L. McCarrey was called Bishop with Howard Milo Egan as First Councilor, and Carl J. Carlson as Second Councilor. The Richmond Ward was split down 100 South.
The first meeting of the South Ward was held on Jan 28, 1917, at the old Scandinavian Meeting House. The South Ward attended their meetings in the old Scandinavian Meeting House until 1923, when the Old South Ward Building was constructed. After the building was destroyed in the 1962 Earthquake, the South Ward started attending their meetings in the Stake Center in 1963.
On July 10, 1977, following rapid growth in Richmond, the North and South wards were divided into three wards, with each ward designated by a number instead of cardinal directions. Richmond 1st Ward, 2nd Ward, and 3rd Ward.
