A Richmond Historic Preservation Commission was banded to start the project, consisting of Barbara Stewart, Elain Ward, Terrie Wierenga, and Dan Miller. They started the project in 2003 "toward this goal of an updated, broader look at Richmond's history...." They began by collecting news clippings, records that contained historical information, interviewed about two dozen individuals, and old photos from libraries across northern Utah. The first time the committee met Merlin Stum was in the spring of 2005 and hired him to make the book in August of the same year.
