The William Smith Farmstead is a historic farm located in Richmond with a barn. The barn was constructed in 1899.
William Fredrick Smith was born Aug 30, 1866, in Burbage, United Kingdom. Along with his parents and other family members, they moved from England to Richmond in 1886. William married Sarah Jane Spackman on Dec 24, 1890, in the Logan, Utah Temple.
Sometime in the 1890s, Elijah Spackman purchased the farm and built a small log home for his family. After many years of farming on it, he sold it to his daughter and son-in-law.2 In 1899, the family built a home and barn, where William worked as a dairyman and took his milk to Sego Milk. There were originally two barns on the property, but in 1940, William's oldest son Edwin moved the barn piece by piece to another property just north.
In the summer of 2006, the foundation of the barn was very deteriorated in its southwest corner. Work with the Utah Conservation Corps, Utah Division of Transportation, Utah State Historic Preservation Office, and Bear River Association of Governments restored the foundation to provide another 50-100 years of life.1
To this day, members of the Smith family care for and use the farm and barn.
