Project Description
For this project, I had to research two recent cybersecurity incidents using credible news sources. The task involved summarizing each event by explaining what occurred, who was affected, and how similar incidents could be prevented in the future. In addition, I evaluated each source using six key information literacy criteria to determine its reliability and overall credibility.
For this part of the module, I watched a series of short videos that introduced key cybersecurity concepts and practices. After each lesson, I completed a short quiz to reinforce my understanding. This foundational knowledge prepared me to analyze real-world cybersecurity incidents in the next part of the project. Upon completing all the quizzes, I earned a certificate of completion, demonstrating my grasp of essential cybersecurity principles.
In May 2024, CNN reported on the rising number of ransomware attacks targeting U.S. hospitals, highlighting the serious threat these incidents pose to patient safety. Cybercriminals are locking up hospital systems and demanding ransoms, which causes delays in critical care, canceled procedures, and disruptions in emergency services. In some cases, these delays have resulted in patient harm or even death. Hospitals with limited cybersecurity resources are particularly vulnerable. Preventative measures include employee cybersecurity training, frequent system backups, and investment in stronger digital defenses.
