Not at all! You are more than welcome to join regardless of whether or not you are a local/national HFES member.
But if you're wondering what the benefits are of joining the national HFES, check out the question How (and why) to become a student affiliate member of national HFES? below.
If you haven't already, join our mailing list! You can also join us on OwlNest.
These are the best ways to keep track of Rice HFES Student Chapter events and get involved. You can also share events with your friends, and get reminded the day of by following our Instagram.
If you are a current HF/HCI graduate student, you are automatically added to the Rice HFES group.
And there are NO fees/dues to join Rice HFES! Membership is free, as are most of our events. We know the college budget is often tight, so we try our best to make our events as accessible as possible to everyone.
We'd love to hear from you! Fill out our Feedback Form to get in touch.
Not at all - in fact, we encourage multidisciplinary participation!
The great thing about Human Factors is that it is all around us no matter what field you work in. Read our What's Human Factors? section on our About Us page here to learn more about the field and see how interdisciplinary it is.
Although becoming a national HFES member is not required to be a member of Rice HFES, it offers quite a few benefits and opportunities. We highly encourage becoming a Student Affiliate Member to be able to take advantage of the discounted Student Registration rate, especially if you are planning on attending local and/or national HFES events such as the Annual HFES Conference that happens every Fall. More on HFES Membership Benefits can be found on their official website here.
Student Affiliate Membership is currently $35 and available to anyone who is enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student. Please note that you will be asked to indicate a faculty member from the institution as an endorser. If you need a faculty member endorser, get in touch with our Rice HFES Faculty Advisor (currently Dr. Phil Kortum) if you would like to list them as an endorser.
Current graduate HCI/HF students may be eligible to get their registration fees reimbursed, based on grad fund availability. Reach out to the Program Administrator to learn more!
Both! We encourage both undergraduate and graduate membership from all disciplines and backgrounds.
That's great! You can start by checking out the research labs in the HCI/HF Program right now. You can also reach out to any of our Officers if their backgrounds and/or research areas interest you, or to get connected with someone in a relevant field.
Attending Rice HFES events and joining our mailing list are also great ways to start getting involved and learning about the different opportunities available in the field.
