Answer:
There is no single instrument in RICO that is the best or easiest to learn, and ultimately, it depends on every person's preferences. Generally speaking, instruments that play the main melody such as those in Huqin and Tanbo tend to be more taxing, while those playing the accompaniment tend to be less complicated, such as in the Cellobass section. However, this doesn't mean that playing the melody doesn't have its benefits. Playing the melody in any orchestra, especially solo sections, can be daunting and more difficult but it is also more fulfilling gratifying. In the end, no matter what section a member is in, he will always be valued as much as everyone else.
If you do choose to join us, we will take note of your preferences and take it into account when allocating instruments, and we will do our best to make sure that everyone is happy with their allocation.
Answer:
Nope! Although any form of music background (Western or Chinese) would help you in your application, it is not a mandatory requirement for joining RICO. You are most welcome to apply for an audition, even if you have no music background, as we can help you realise your hidden potential as a musician. We welcome all Rafflesians of all backgrounds.
Answer:
Nope, you don't! Once you join RICO and have been allocated a section, you will be issued an Instrument Loan Form and after filling it up, you may bring the instrument home daily to practice! Any other required materials (e.g. rosin, strings, reeds) will also be given to you, free of charge.
Answer:
Auditions in RICO generally test for musical aptitude, in areas such as pitching and rhythm. If you have music background in a Chinese Instrument, you may be asked to bring your instrument and perform a piece during the audition. Unless you are performing a piece, no preparation is needed. Selection is based on multiple criteria, including the audition test results, background and most importantly, your enthusiasm. Around 25 Y1s are selected every year out of the applicants. Once again, don't worry if you do not have music background!
Answer:
Yes! You will meet new people, make new friends, develop your interpersonal skills, all while learning valuable skills in music making and enjoying the music that the orchestra produces.
If you have any further questions, refer to the instructions below to fill in a form, and we will get back to you shortly.
