RGV Activism fair Details

Schedule

9:20-9:30 AM

Start joining the call!Because we have a lot planned out for the day, we’ve set off time for people to join the call so that we can start at 9:30am sharp! You can also take this time to talk with the other attendees through our icebreakers!

9:30-9:55 AM

Opening Session: Welcome to the RGV Activism Fair! Before we get into anything, we will take the first 30 minutes to give attendees a brief overview on who we are, go over the schedule, and announce the rules set in place just so everything goes smoothly!

10:00-10:55 AM

Be the Change Speaker Panel: Listen to a few of our many inspiring activists of the RGV through our speaker panel! Hear their stories, how their work has impacted them and others, and get to interact with them to help you!

11:00-11:45

Share Your Thoughts! Aside from advocating for the causes you believe in, it is important that you listen to all perspectives of a certain topic. You can learn something new, either changing your stance, or solidifying it! In this session, participate in a moderated discussion on the 2020 Presidential Elections. Because we are all learning, we ask that you stay respectful (no name-calling, hate speech, etc). This is a judgement-free zone! :)

-BREAK-

1:00- 1:45 PM

The Importance of Civic Engagement Now more than ever, it is important to be involved in the political atmosphere. In this session hosted by the Junior State of America, learn more about how you can become an effective civic participant.

2:00- 2:45 PM

Culture, Community, and Identity: The Importance of Youth Empowerment Too often, we are ashamed of who we are and where we come from, so we limit ourselves from reaching our fullest potential. That’s why we invited South Texas Ideas and the International Cultural Society to talk about the importance of empowering each other’s culture, community, and identity.

3:00- 3:45 PM

Learning Beyond the Classroom: The Importance of Taking Initiative There’s more to learning than what is offered in the traditional classroom setting, from finding your passions to entertaining your own curiosities. Join Jopi Learning Community and Inspiration Fine Arts as they talk about the importance of taking initiative to pursue your own interests.

4:00- 4:45 PM

How to Lend a Helping Hand Nothing beats directly helping out your community. In this session, RGV Bake4Sake and Friendship of Women, our mutual aid organizations, will give tips on how to lend a helping hand to others.

5:00-5:45 PM

Self-care for Activists To be frank, activism, while very rewarding, is a heavy load; from dismantling systems that have not worked for us in the past, to organizing events, on top of the COVID-19 anomaly, it is a lot to handle. But don’t let this scare you! To end the day, learn how to equally balance serving yourself and others, from tips on how to prevent burnout, to making sure you stay involved even during the current pandemic!
