The features in ‘realistic’ mode are more extensive:
In this mode, you operate the throttle and gear lever yourself. Unlike the previous version, you can no longer use the mouse, which proved to be insufficiently precise and ultimately impractical.
To drive in ‘realistic’ mode, you will therefore use keyboard shortcuts. These shortcuts are customisable (see this page : 5 Keyboard shortcuts )
To start, follow these step-by-step instructions: (keyboard shortcuts in brackets)
- Set the reverser to forward (F)
- Release the brakes (Q)
- Shift into short first gear (Shift+Z)
- Immediately push the joystick forward (Shift+A)
The train will gradually accelerate to 10 km/h. Watch the blue box on the right of the screen. It shows the speed engaged and the throttle position.
Once you reach 10 km/h, shift into first long gear (Shift+Z) and push the throttle forward again (Shift+A).
When you reach approximately 30 km/h, return the throttle to zero (Shift+Q) and immediately move the gear lever to neutral between 1st and 2nd gear (Shift+Z).
Watch the rev counters and wait for the engines to return to idle speed.
Then shift into 2nd gear (Shift+Z) and continue to accelerate (Shift+A)....
You will shift gears as indicated below:
You can adjust your speed at any time by gradually increasing your throttle (Shift+W) or decreasing it (Shift+X).
Coasting mode: once you have reached the desired speed, you will save fuel – and your ears – by switching to coasting mode.
- Move the throttle to zero (Shift+Q)
- Immediately move the gear lever to the neutral position (Shift+S).
The engine speed will return to idle, and the train will continue coasting. If the train slows down (due to friction, air resistance, a slope, etc.), accelerate again:
- Return the gear lever to the engaged position (Shift+Z).
- Push the throttle forward (Shift+A).
Slowing down and stopping:
You can slow down naturally using only the engine brake.
With the gearbox still engaged, pull the throttle towards you (Shift+X = slow down by approximately 10 km/h or Shift+Q = slow down to minimum engine speed).
When you are close to minimum engine speed, a red light will come on on the right-hand side of the screen to indicate that it is time to downshift. If you do not react, the engine will stall and the train will stop. You will then have to wait for the engines to restart (managed automatically by the script).
To downshift : with the throttle at its minimum level, disengage the gearbox (Shift+S) and then shift into neutral (Shift+S again). Wait for the engine speed to stabilise at idle and engage the lower gear (Shift+S). The train will continue to slow down.
If you are in 2nd gear and the minimum engine speed has been reached, press Shift+S twice. The gear lever will return to its initial position, below first gear. Finish stopping using the brakes.
To stop using the brakes:
Apply the brakes (pressing the A button once is sufficient) and move the throttle to zero (Shift+Q). Then:
- quickly operate the gear lever as described above, or
- immediately move the gear lever to the neutral position (Shift+S) and wait for the train to come to a complete stop; then press Shift+S as many times as necessary to return the gear lever to its initial position in first neutral position.
Warning: as in real life - seen and approved by a former RGP driver, Dominique alias dreco - braking distances are very long. Anticipate!
