It was the lush South American capital of the seventies. The first wrinkles of the great metropolis had not yet arrived. Its children, with their wooden and tin toys, ruled the streets of the central square after school. Sidewalks of joy that showed the chalk stripes of the game of “the airplane”. And in the square, the local currency was the metra. Only the sparkling spin of the spinning tops, in their vain attempt to drill the ground, reached the energy of these kids. The paper posters were the masters of the walls with their attractive commercial advertisements, some inviting to go to the magical and imposing Amazon jungle. A majestic place of deceptive closeness, it reminded the concrete that this land belonged to the tepuis. The labyrinths of buildings, felt in their guts the fear of being so close to those lands full of green and rain. Nobody thought then, that one day, in a trick of time, those endless afternoons would be over, and all their children would finally leave. The modern buildings and the streets without posters still silently remember the day they left, taking their toys with them in a cable car to live forever in the imaginary world of the eternal jungle.

Era la lozana capital suramericana de los años setenta. Las primeras arrugas de la gran metrópolis, aun no llegaban. Sus niños con sus juguetes de madera y hojalata, gobernaban las calles de la plaza central al salir de la escuela. Aceras de alegría que mostraban el rayado de tiza del juego de “el avión”. Y en la plaza, la moneda local era la metra. Sólo el centelleante girar de los trompos, en su vano intento de taladrar el suelo, alcanzaba la energía de estos chicos. Los afiches de papel, eran los amos de las paredes con sus atractivos anuncios comerciales, algunos invitando a ir a la mágica e imponente selva amazónica. Lugar majestuoso de engañosa cercanía, recordaba al concreto que esa tierra pertenecía a los tepuyes. Los laberintos de edificios, sentían en sus entrañas el miedo de estar tan cerca de esas tierras llenas de verde y lluvia. Nadie pensaba entonces, que algún un día, en una jugarreta del tiempo, se acabarían esas tardes infinitas, y todos sus niños, finalmente se irían. Los modernos edificios, y las calles ya sin afiches, todavía recuerdan en silencio, el día que partieron llevándose consigo sus juguetes, en un vagón de teleférico, a vivir por siempre en el imaginario mundo de la selva eterna.
