My name is Ryan, aka "Coach Vigh" or "Vigh". I will provide each client with a personalized, goal-oriented program of therapeutic mentoring, support, health and wellness, recovery support, and life-skills training to prepare youth and adults for reaching their full potential and becoming the person that they desire to be.
I take an integrative approach to mentoring by utilizing multiple theoretical models, in addition to educational strategies, to best fit an individual client’s needs. "My approach emerged from my formal instruction in Cognitive Psychology and Educational Psychology and my experience working in the field for 18 years, as well as my desire to instill the positive changes in someone that my mentor was able to foster in me." This base philosophy combines therapeutic techniques with educational practices to aid clients in reaching their potential and becoming the person that they desire to be. The Integrative approach is also concerned with "why" and "how” clients make changes in order to bring forth a more powerful means to aid clientele in improving their lives.
I do this for a living because I want to be the role model and advocate I, and so many others, needed in my life. When I was younger, there were times when I was lost, trapped amidst depression, fear, and a lack of direction, with substance use as an irresponsible and poor means to cope. In high school, much of this was true. To compound the matter, a devastating injury disbanded my central healthy coping skill of participating in sports. I did not have direction, goals, passion, productive coping skills, or even the willingness to seek any of them out. Despite these difficulties, a teacher at the school I attended believed in me. She focused on my strengths while others focused their vision upon my differences and my weaknesses. She was the first mentor I encountered on an interactive level in my life. Having a mentor in my life drove me to improve who and what I was, and I hope to fill that void for those who are in need of it. I do what I do so that I can support and inspire others, and I hope to make the difference in other's lives that she made in mine. I want to instill the inspiration to become someone better, someone who cares, someone who takes action to make a better life and a better world for themselves and others.
My Approach
A few fundamental techniques and principles of my practice include:
A Client Centered approach to mentoring & psychotherapy that builds respectful and caring relationships. Empathy and understanding how things are from the client's point of view, as well as taking part in the learning process side-by-side with clients, are important to this approach. Consistent with this approach, transparency and genuine interaction are imperative. Unconditional Positive Regard is also necessary, accepting the client without judgment or disapproval.
I utilize several Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) strategies focusing on the construction and reconstruction of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This methodology uses numerous systemic and goal-oriented techniques that address undeveloped or dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and cognitive processes. Specific strategies are formulated to tackle particular issues followed by implementing actions to enact positive change. Mindfulness-based cognitive practices and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) are also useful in this realm.
Experiential Psychotherapy practices, in particular recreation and adventure, engage clients in activities that allow them to more readily identify and address hidden (or subconscious) issues as they “let their guard down” and allow a deeper level of psycho-therapeutic work to be accomplished. Clients can identify obstacles, experience successes, improve their self esteem, and strive towards taking accountability for their actions and well-being. These types of activities also provide positive and alternative means to substance abuse, isolation, and addictions that many clients are faced with overcoming. Community based experiences and activities may include going hiking or providing transportation to seek employment.
