Late Pleistocene Zooarchaeology in the Near East

In our quest to understand subsistence, demography and settlement patterns of Upper Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic hunter-gatherers, we study archaeofaunas from a range of sites in Israel and beyond. A major project is studying the well-preserved animal bone accumulations of Manot Cave. There, an exceptional series of Ahmarian and especially Levantine Aurignacian layers, as well as contemporaneous hyena dens, have been excavated since 2010.

Other studied  animal bone assemblages include Caucasus sites (Ortvale Klde, Bondi and Lusakert caves), Nile Valley sites in Kom Ombo and Wadi Halfa, the Geometric Kebaran site of Neve David, and Natufian sites (el-Wad, Raqefet and Hof Shahaf).
