On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik, into orbit. Sputnik shocked Americans who feared the U.S. had fallen behind the USSR in science & technology. As a result of Sputnik, the Cold War escalated into a space race to show American & Soviet dominance. In 1958, the United States government created the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) to catch up with the Soviet Union.
United States schools promoted math, science, & technology. The Soviet Union beat the USA in space by launching the first man into orbit, and seemed to have the superior technology. In 1962, President John Kennedy committed the United States to beating the Soviet Union in the race to the moon. In 1969, Apollo 11 landed United States astronauts on the moon ending this portion of the Space Race. Once the Soviet Union was disbanded, the United States and Russia have worked together on projects in space including the construction and use of the International Space Station.
