Rethink Africa received funding from the German Embassy, the Barloworld Empowerment Foundation and Local Initiatives Fund South Africa- (LIFSA) an initiative of the Government of the Principality of Monaco for a project to curb food insecurity in Evaton, Gauteng, South Africa. Through grant funding, we have installed shaded nets/hydro tunnels; and purchase farming equipment and material for backyard vegetable gardeners, youth and women farmers that work in schools and preschools and donate a portion of the produce to the schools feeding schemes. The people we work with also produce for the local markets in the peri-urban settlements of Evaton and surrounding areas.
Our programme also offers workshops for women farmers and unemployed youth on the following : Climate Smart Agriculture Practices to increase produce, access to finance and non-financial support from public and private initiatives and building support through a network of local producers to curb food insecurity. The women, youth and children from Early Childhood Development Centers that participate in our programme receive training on the following:
Micro-gardening & soil bed cultivation, raised beds, soil fertility and seed nurseries
Water resources – rainwater harvesting, domestic wastewater use, other waters, drip irrigation
Composting & mulching techniques
Vegetable gardening
Food harvesting, preservation, storage & processing
Integrated pest management & vegetable cultivation
Aquaponics
