Code-RED is a participatory research project at the University of Nottingham that brings local residents and researchers together to shape the future of digital research.
Digital technologies increasingly influence everyday life, from online services and data use to artificial intelligence and automated decision-making. Code-RED creates space for Nottingham residents to share their experiences, values, and priorities, and to help guide how digital research at the University should develop in responsible, inclusive, and accountable ways.
What will we do?
Code-RED uses participatory and co-design approaches, which means that members of the public are actively involved in shaping discussions and outcomes, rather than being asked to comment on decisions that have already been made.
Through a series of facilitated workshops and follow-up meetings, participants work alongside University researchers to:
Discuss how digital technologies affect everyday life
Identify what responsible digital research should focus on
Explore the values that should guide digital research
Consider how public voices can be meaningfully included in research decisions and governance
Why are we doing this?
The project aims to strengthen trust between researchers and communities, and to ensure that future digital research at the University of Nottingham reflects the concerns and values of local residents. This is because decisions about digital research priorities are often made without direct input from the people most affected by digital technologies. Code-RED responds to growing calls for:
Greater public accountability in research.
More inclusive and ethical approaches to digital innovation.
Research agendas grounded in lived experience and community priorities.
Who can take part?
We are inviting Nottingham residents from all walks of life to take part. You do not need any technical knowledge or academic background.
