RESPECT (Research & Empowerment for Social Progress, the Environment & Crop Technology) is an NGO based in Mauritius having the main purpose to reinforce our national food security by propagating knowledge in greenhouse farming to the population, especially the youngsters, women & vulnerable groups which it trains & integrates in greenhouse community farming.
The NGO, registered at Registrar of Association in 2016, is composed of social entrepreneurs, farmers, engineers & technicians who strive to tackle the problem of food security by thinking outside the box to find innovative solutions to farming problems which persist despite involvement of the authorities.
Consequently, the other activity of RESPECT is Research & Development in recycling industrial waste (pallets, polystyrene, waste fabric, tyres, fastfood cups, PET bottles, etc) & construction waste (lumber often thrown into rivers, etc) into infrastructural components for greenhouses to cut down setup cost. This due to its ambition in the future to mass deploy greenhouses in vulnerable regions (where SRM families are located), especially in times threatened by pandemics & by a possible World War 3 that can lead to famine.
Core activities of RESPECT
(1) Empowerment of poor and vulnerable communities, women, children, the disabled & displaced fishermen by training & integrating them in Greenhouse Farming (growing vegetables & aquaculture) so that they can become self -sustainable in food production for their own consumption & for generating income, and also to become educated in agroecology at the benefit of our environment.
(2) Create awareness in the importance of growing our own food locally & to promote interest in the population to get into farming in order to counteract impending threats to our food security arising from pandemics, wars, cargo ship piracy & ageing farmers’ population.
(3) Finding innovative solutions to build grow systems & fish tanks using recycled waste industrial materials to preserve the environment, cut down cost & make it feasible for poor and vulnerable communities to grow their own vegetables & produce their own fish/shrimps in greenhouses.
(4) Bilateral exchange with Madagascar, through its branch 'RESPECT Madagascar' in Majunga & Antananarivo, where it holds the activities above through a dedicated team located there. The NGO expects to expand to other islands such as the Seychelles, Reunion island, etc in the very near furture.
