Kamakura is a city in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is known for its historical landmarks, including temples, shrines, and a giant Buddha statue. Kamakura was once the political center of Japan during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and is now a popular tourist destination.

Kamakura Period

The Kamakura period (1185–1333) was the first era governed by Japanese Samurai (the Kamakura shogunate), which was officially established in 1192* at Kamakura by the first shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo after the Genpei War.

Kamakurakokomae Railroad Crossing

The Kamakurakokomae Railroad Crossing near the Kamakura-Kokomae station is a super populor spot in Japan. It is famous for its picturesque scenery and the unique sight of a train passing. This railroad crossing also appears in the opening of the popular basketball anime "Slam Dunk".

Enoshima

Enoshima is a small island located off the coast of Fujisawa city next to Kamakura. It is a popular tourist destination known for its delicious seafood, shrines, love romance, and stunning views of Mount Fuji and Sagami Bay. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and can be easily reached. 

Great Buddha

The Great Buddha is a large bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands at about 13.35 meters (44 feet) tall and weighs around 93 tons. The statue has been cast in 1252 and was originally housed in a temple. But, the building was destroyed multiple times over the years and now being exposed for centuries.

Kamakura is a beautiful city with a variety of hiking routes that offer stunning views of the old and historical city and surrounding nature, such as Daibutsu Hiking Course, Tenen Hiking Course, Kamakura Seven Temples Hiking Course, and Gion-yama Hiking Course (see more).

Komach-Dori

Starting next to Kamakura station, Komachi-dori is the most popular shopping street in Kamakura city. You will see so many souvenir shops such as kimonos, traditional knives, and ceramics. It is also a great spot to grabe a snack and sweet. On top of that, there are kimono rental shops!
