June 2022
The first action we took was to survey Harrison residents' awareness and concerns about various aspects of the town in relation to climate change. This survey formed the basis for our events for the next two years. Here are the questions, and a summary of the results:
Online and paper versions of a survey gathered opinions from Harrison residents and a few non-residents over a period from June 14 through August 13, 2022. 322 responses were gathered with 290 of these, or 90%, from either full time or part-time residents. The first two questions asked for respondents’ concerns and values about the future of Harrison. Then, we moved on to questions focusing more on climate. This document shows only responses from full and part-time residents, omitting the non-resident results. For all the questions shown with bar graphs, respondents could check multiple answers.
Over 80% of respondents were very or somewhat concerned about climate change.
The most important issues to residents are to create a solar farm ordinance and to put solar power on our town's municipal buildings. (The 2020 “Maine Won’t Wait” plan recommends that towns lead by example; this would be a very visible gesture.)
People want to learn about gardening and other resilience skills, they need help tapping into State funds for weatherizing their houses and they are interested in a bulk purchase to save money on heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. Fully one fourth of respondents just don't know how to get started.
Are you a Harrison resident?
93% of respondents represented in these results were full-time residents, and the rest were part-time.
