Current Projects
Students working in the Peer Mentorship Subteam are currently developing a mixed-method study aimed at better understanding the experinces of students who take on peer mentorship roles in undergraduate research settings. Using the Process Oriented Model of Mentorship (Eby, 2013), R/R members are developing a survey and interview protocol to better understand the impacts of demographic and psycho-social similarities between peer mentors and their mentees.
Using a mixed-method approach, the Career Readiness Measurement subteam is developing a proposal to engage in (1) exploratory data analysis of large-scale, longitudinal surveys of undergraduate researchers' self-reported levels of career competencies, and (2) semi-structured interviews with students engaged in undergraduate research to more clearly understand their engagement with the career readiness survey instrument and develop a more nuianced understanding of their actual versus reported levels of career readiness.
Recognizing the social and academic supports built into undergraduate research experiences, this subteam is narrowing its focus on understanding the experiences of first-generation students who take on research opportunities. Using a qualitative approach, the subteam is developing an interview protocol to better understand mechanisms of support for first-generation students provided at higher education institutions (community) and through research experiences (mentorship, social capital) .
Ongoing Research
A core focus of the R/R Team is the development of mixed and multi-method research. R/R Projects most often develop projects using sequential mixed methods designs.
In addition to addressing questions about undergraduate research experiences, a secondary focus of our team is understanding, testing, and proposing best practices for the use of AI and ML in mixed methods and qualitative research methods.
Past Projects
Below is a subset of posters summarizing some of the research Dr. Ferguson engaged in and presented prior to launching the R/R VIP Team. These past projects provide examples of the types of work current students in R/R engage in.
