Welcome to HDF 375: Research Methods in HDFS. I am excited to begin our semester together, and it is my sincere hope you will find this course fun and engaging. We're all in this together, so let me know how I can best support you!
Please carefully review information on all pages of this syllabus before our first class meeting on August 20 and bring your questions with you then.

Best,
Dr. Anne
This course is being taught "online synchronous." This means there are required class meetings, but they are vitual - through Teams.
We will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 11am to 12:15pm.
The link for joining class (and office hours) is HDF 375 Class & Office Hours
Students enrolled in online synchronous classes should be attending from a computer with an internal or external webcam and microphone. Please do not attempt to attend HDF 375 (or complete assignments) using a cell phone or tablet.
The first class meeting is Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
To succeed in HDF 375, you must be an active and engaged learning, studying multiple days each week (not just before exams), and attending office hours if you are having difficulties. I have structured this course to support this type of engagement, but ultimately, it is up to each individual student to make sure they are taking the course seriously. Please be sure to do your part by making all of the following high priorities:
Purchase or rent the required textbook in time to have it available by the first day of class. Have your textbook available to consult during in-class activities.
Attend every class meeting - including the first meeting.
Carefully complete all readings before the class session in which we will cover that topic. There will be graded quizzes at the start of most class meetings to make sure students are doing their reading ahead of class.
Study what we have learned in each class meeting before the following class meeting, making sure you understand what we have covered thoroughly. There will be graded quizzes at the start of most class meetings to make sure students are studying "as they go" rather than waiting until before exams to review material.

I view the diversity among UNCG students, faculty, and staff as a tremendous strength. It is my hope that neurodiverse students, students from different races and ethnicities, genders and gender identities, ages, sexual orientations, national identities, political affiliations, with various health conditions and challenges, and other backgrounds and identities feel safe, welcome, and supported in the courses I teach. My intention is to integrate into these courses materials and activities that represent and are respectful of the diversity of the UNCG community and beyond - although I recognize there is variability in the extent to which important issues related to diversity can be seamlessly integrated into the content of different courses.
As we embark on our journey together this academic session, I encourage and will appreciate any suggestions you might have as to how I can make our course a more welcoming space and better integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into course content.
I believe all individuals have the right to be addressed and referred to respectfully and in accordance with their personal identities. Please make me aware of the name and pronouns you would like to use in class. I will do my best to use them when I address you and support classmates in doing the same.
If you have a documented disability and need to discuss academic accommodations, please reach out to me as soon as possible to make necessary arrangements.
If any of our scheduled exams or class meetings conflict with your religious holidays, please let me know as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly.
Mistakes will be made - by me and by your classmates. Let us be kind when this occurs and use these errors as opportunities to effectively communicate with one another and learn to do better in the future.
