Fall 2025
In-Class Quizzes
Most classes will begin with a brief (typically 10 minutes, a bit more or less depending on content) closed-book/no notes quiz completed in the Lockdown Browser with Respondus Monitor in Teams (meaning you have to be present in the Teams class meeting to take the quiz).
Quizzes will include two types of content:
multiple choice questions related to the reading you were assigned for the class period - to make sure you read
short answer questions related to the content we covered in the previous class(es) - to make sure you studied this material since the last class
Attempting to access an in-class quiz when you are not in the class Teams meeting will be considered an academic integrity violation. You will receive a grade of 0 on the quiz and be referred to the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities. The same consequences will be applied to any classmate who attempts to help you access an in-class quiz when you are not in the class Teams meeting.
Quizzes will open at 11:01am and close automatically after the allotted time - meaning students who log into class late will have less time to complete the quiz.
When students log into class at 11am, there will be one minute before the quiz begins. During that time, students will hold up their phones and then place them in an out of reach location behind them. I will then provide the class with the access code for the quiz. Students who log into class after 11am will need to show me their phones and place them in an out of reach location behind them before I provide them with the code.
Quizzes are closed book/no notes and will be administered using the Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor. Attempting to consult your text, notes, Canvas materials, phone, or other individuals or sources during quizzes will be considered an academic integrity violation.
Quizzes will be taken in Respondus Monitor. There are strict requirements for how students must take exams. I will not accept for grading any quiz for which these requirements are violated. There will be no warnings or second chances - students will simply receive a grade of zero for violating the following instructions - and potentially a referral for an academic integrity violation.
Showing me their cell phone, turning around, and placing it somewhere behind them and out of reach for the entirety of the quiz. Students may not retrieve or view their cell phone until the quiz has closed - even if they submit their quiz early.
Students must show their full face for the entirety of the quiz. There will be no warnings about this, so be sure you and your webcam are appropriately positioned.
Students may not read exam questions aloud in an audible voice during the exam, no matter how quietly.
To account for illness, personal emergencies, and other class absences, I will drop the three lowest quiz grades in calculation of final grades. If you fail to take a quiz, it will count as one of those dropped grades.

4 Exams (including the Final Exam)
Exams (including the Final Exam) are non-cumulative. However, Research Methods builds over the course of the semester. It is difficult to do well on later exams if you do not thoroughly understand material from earlier parts of the course.
Students will have 75 minutes to complete each exam.
Exams will be completed outside of class time. Exams will open at 11:59pm on Wednesdays and are due at 11:59pm the Sunday immediately following.

There will be an environment check at the start of the exam. It must be performed slowly and thoroughly. The first part of the environment check will require that students show the camera their cell phone, turn around, and place it somewhere behind them and out of reach for the entirety of the exam. Students may not retrieve or view their cell phone for the entirety of the exam.
Students must show their full face for the entirety of the exam. If a student's face is not fully displayed, Respondus Monitor will display a single warning that students must click on to continue with the exam. After that single warning, there must be no time at which students' full faces are displayed.
Students may not read exam questions aloud audibly during the exam, no matter how quietly.
Exams cannot be taken early.
