For its inaugural 2019-2020 season, Renew Music will be offering a composers’ workshop to Reno/Sparks/Northern Nevada area students as well as the general public. This is a chance for aspiring composers to gain invaluable experience working with professional performers and perfect a new musical composition over the course of multiple workshops.
Note: The time limit for completed compositions is 6:00 minutes.
Instrumentation available for 2019-2020 workshops:
- B♭ Clarinet doubling E♭ Alto Saxophone
- Violin
- Cello
- Piano
- Percussion (pitched and unpitched)
Expectations for participating composers:
- You must have a music teacher available to work with you on your piece outside of workshops. This can be a private music teacher or school music teacher, as long as they are willing to help provide guidance and able to help you complete the piece. If you are interested in finding a teacher specifically for music composition, we have a list of area teachers we can share.
- You need to be self-motivated and dedicated to the process of writing and re-writing. Each minute of a musical composition can take many hours of careful, patient work—last minute or intermittent effort is not conducive to this process.
- You must attend all three workshops, master class and final concert. If you have a time conflict on the day of a workshop, we will do our best to schedule you at a time of day that works for you.
The cost for Reno Composers’ Workshop for 2019-20 is $350 and includes:
- Three workshops with professional musicians.
- A public, professional performance of your piece upon successful completion of the 2019-2020 Workshop.
- Free admission for the composer and one complimentary ticket to the May Workshop Concert.
- Financial aid is available upon request.
- Space is limited to 15 composers.
Students who have not entered 7th grade must be cleared by RCW Director Jason Fromme before submitting an application. Email Jason at jfromme1@yahoo.com to schedule an interview. Priority will be given to students in grades 7-12.
