Karate (空手), a striking art first originated from the Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Okinawa), influenced by Chinese Kungfu, particularly White Crane. It was first brought to mainland Japan in 1922 by Shotokan's founder Gichin Funakoshi.
空(kara) means "empty" 手(te) means "hand" while 道(do) means "way" which put together Karate-do ("Way of the Empty Hand").
The Basic of Basics
Practice of the basic techniques (stances, punches, kicks, blocks) whilst striving for perfection
“Karate-do is a lifetime study.”
– Mabuni Kenwa (1889-1952)
The Forms
Practice of a fixed pattern of movements based on Kihon techniques. A good avenue for self protection based on the applications of kata (bunkai)
“Once a kata has been learned, it must be practiced repeatedly until it can be applied in an emergency, for knowledge of just the sequence of a form in Karate is useless.” – Gichin Funakoshi
Sparring
Application of kata and kihon techniques to be applied in a fast-paced sparring situation, whether it is for tournaments or self protection
“It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.”
– Sun Tzu
