About

I am a Research Fellow at ICS-ULISBOA since 2020. The core of my work is in modern economic and social history, mainly social history, primarily the means by which associations provide services to people who are poor and generally excluded from access to credit, health care and other forms social inclusion.

I hold a Ph.D. in Contemporary History (University of Lisbon, 2018) with the thesis, Entre Mutualismo e Capitalismo. Os Caminhos do Montepio Geral (1840-1930), which was published as a book of the same title in 2021. I also co-authored the monograph Sob o Signo do Pelicano. História do Montepio Geral 1840-2015 (2015), on the same topic. I also have a Master's degree in Modern History (FCSH, New University of Lisbon), with the thesis Alcântara, A Evolução Industrial de Meados do Século XIX ao final da I.ª República (2009).

The creation of institutions that provide access to credit for the poor and excluded supports my work within the CEEC (FCT). I have been working on Portuguese informal credit markets, in particular the study of pawnshops from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century.

I also study friendly societies as health care providers for the poor. I co-authored the monograph Anatomia de uma Associação. A CSC-ASMECL entre 1872 e 2017 (2017), as well as the paper, De porta em porta. Os cuidados de saúde nas associações de socorro mútuo: O caso da ASMEC (2021). I was also a member of the project Hospitalis - Hospital architecture in Portugal at the dawn of modernity: identification, characterisation and contextualisation (University of Lisbon), funded by FCT.

The theme of economic development and Portuguese backwardness has been another basis of my research. I have recently co-authored a paper on stunting and wasting among children and young adults in Portugal during the 20th century, Stunting and Wasting in a Growing Economy: Biological Living Standards in Portugal during the Twentieth Century (Economics & Human Biology) and joined the Worldwide Historical Stunting Project, which is a collaborative project, coordinated by Eric Schneider (LSE).

I am also an Assistant Professor at the School of Arts and Humanities (University of Lisbon) since 2020, where I teach Modern Economic History and I co-coordinate the ICS Postgraduate Seminar in History for Ph.D students (PIHUD). Furthermore, I was the co-coordinator of the book Primeiros Escritos de Economia (2018), the 18th volume of the collection Obras Pioneiras da Cultura Portuguesa.
