Voldemort's Previous Life

Harry Potter wanted to know more about Voldemort. Who was he? How was his childhood? Was he always evil? Why was Ravana reincarnated as Voldemort? He had many questions after he found out that he was a reincarnation of Rama. Parvati agreed to answer all his questions about Lord Voldemort's background as we learned it a long time ago from our family.

In his previous life Lord Voldemort was Ravana, who was the king of Lanka and wanted to be the most powerful king in the Southeast Asia. Then there was an epic battle between Rama and Ravana, where Rama took out all twelve heads of Ravana. Ravana was dead and Rama brought happiness to rest of the world. He fought the darkness with his light, which is still celebrated as a festival in India. One of the festivals is Diwali, which is the festival of lights celebrated for Rama's return to Ayodhya. It is celebrated by doing fireworks, giving presents and spending time with the family. Another festival is Dussehra, which is celebrated by burning statues of Ravana to remember Rama's victory.

Lord Yama, the lord of death, came down to earth to take Ravana's soul to the jury of afterlife. He looked at Ravana's Dharma, Karma and Moksha. Harry asked me, "What is Dharma, Karma and Moksha? and I replied that they are three fundamentals of life in hinduism. Dharma is a fundamental law of living in accordance to the universe and Karma is the moral law of cause and effect. Where as Moksha is an unity with gods as a soul is released from the cycle of death and rebirth. Back to the story, everything was on the negative balance for Ravana and there was no way he was achieving Moksha from the cycle of rebirth. Lord Yama saw that Ravana had only used six out of seven rebirths. As he was cursed by a sage to only have total of seven rebirths. Therefore, there was one more cycle of rebirth left, which could help Ravana's soul if he used his last time on the earth wisely. That means he could do no evil and had to follow all the sayings that are stated in the holy book of Hinduism, Bhagavad Gita, to lessen his punishment. The Gita has all the wisdom needed to achieve Moksha through the Dharma and Karma. Soon, Lord Yama used his powers to reincarnate the soul of Ravana into a young boy named Tom Riddle.

As soon as Tom Riddle was born, his mom died from a pregnancy trauma. Tom grew up without his mom and felt lonely as his father was not there for his needs. His father sent Tom to an orphanage around the age of five because he could no longer provide a good care for him. Tom's father was involved with drugs, alcohol, and illegal issues after his mom passed away. Tom had a miserable childhood, until one rainy day. He got a visit from the headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore, who saw potential in him and asked him to join him at Hogwarts. Dumbledore explained to him about the Wizarding world and how he had magical powers that he never knew of. Tom saw this as an opportunity to grow and become independent so he happily accepted it.

Tom Riddle was a good student for the first two years at Hogwarts. He was one of the best students Dumbledore ever had. One day, Dumbledore was just casually talking to him in the office and he suddenly asked a question about how to be the greatest wizard in the world. Dumbledore had no idea about Tom's plan. He just saw his innocence and gave him all the answers. The same day, Tom began plotting for evil by spreading parts of his soul into a snake named Nagini, leading to Adharma. Harry asked if Adharma was just the opposite of dharma and I nodded. Tom was tired of feeling neglected and wanted to be the most powerful, as he saw that as making him the happiest person. Tom might have been a brilliant student, but he made some very bad choices paving a path to Adharma. That's how he started his journey to evil by forming an army and putting half of his life in Nagini, the snake. He gained more knowledge from the headmasters at Hogwarts and used it against them to plan out his evil ploy.

Author's note: I incorporated Ramayana into the story by talking about the battle between Rama and Ravana. I wanted to incorporate the whole after death situation and so thought this would be the best way to go about it. Then I talked about Lord Yama and how he plays the role of getting souls from earth and examines the person's deeds on earth. This helped me tie the story to my theme about Reincarnation. I added details from Harry Potter about Lord Voldemort and his childhood. Some of the details are similar, while others I made up like the death of Tom's parents to make the story flow into the right direction. Then I talked about how Lord Voldemort turned evil, similarly to the books, and how his background had a huge impact on him to do so. I talked about how his real name was Tom Riddle just like in the series and how he started working on his plan at Hogwarts by deceiving the greatest professors. He gained as much information as he could about immortality and used it to his will to achieve power. This is a story within a story, so the Patil sisters are reminiscing all the details when they were sharing it with Harry Potter.
