Joy of Motion Dance Center (JOMDC) was founded by Michelle Ava, M.A. in 1976 as a not-for-profit dance education organization in the Cleveland Park area of Washington, DC.
Ava recognized that DC needed a dance environment that could serve a more diverse community to include non-dancers as well as aspiring professionals; to that end, JOMDC was founded under one premise and belief that ‘Dance is for Everyone.” At Joy of Motion, the goal was and remains to bring dance to all (regardless of means) and to connect dance to other related arts. Since its inception, JOMDC quickly became a place where students could study, observe, and perform a wide variety of dance forms.
Michelle believed and held to the belief that at Joy of Motion, dance is not the province of an elite or talented few. Dance belongs to us all, and we all belong in the studio and on the stage — growing and learning, moving and creating.
As we move forward, our goals have shifted to financial sustainability and program expansion. We have learned our lessons from the past and are prepared to catapult JOMDC into the next millennia.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
JOMDC is built on a foundation of Authenticity, Vibrancy, and Awareness for the dancers we serve. We all are here to grow and learn through our experiences. Therefore our reach goes beyond offering classes as we address the wholistic well-being of individuals (of all ages) who enter our doors. Providing rich experiences for our students and the community is key to our mission. Please view the following program highlights. As we move forward we welcome your ideas and suggestions to build what will be the heartbeat of our institution.
Program Overview
Joy of Motion offers a robust program for youth, teens, and adults through classes, camps, workshops, master classes and more. Youth classes are available for students aged 2 years to 15 years as enrollment classes for Fall, Winter, Spring, and/or Summer terms. Teen and adult classes are available as drop-in classes in a variety of styles, giving maximum scheduling freedom. Special workshops and masterclasses are offered throughout the year to give intensive instruction in a particular style. Joy of Motion also offers special programs throughout the year for both youth and adults.

JOY OF MOTION DANCE CENTER has two studio spaces within the H Street location which are available to rent. Discounts are available for long-term rental contracts. We rent our spaces for rehearsals, private lessons (defined as one or two students), and private classes with a faculty member. Availability is limited while we gear up for our Fall Term.
