OMI - Established 2022
The Office of Mathematics Improvement (OMI) was established as part of the Alabama Numeracy Act, a landmark legislation aimed at improving mathematics achievement and numeracy skills across the state. The Act, passed to address persistent gaps in math proficiency, mandates evidence-based instruction, professional development for educators, and targeted interventions for students struggling in mathematics.
OMI serves as the central hub for coordinating these efforts. It provides strategic leadership, resources, and support to schools and districts to implement high-quality math instruction. Key responsibilities of the office include training teachers on effective math practices, facilitating the adoption of standards-aligned curriculum, and ensuring accountability in meeting state math goals.
Region 8 of the Office of Mathematics Improvement is supported by five Regional Coordinators who play a pivotal role in implementing these initiatives locally. These coordinators are:
Chenille Chambers
Mark Coty
Jasmine Dumas
Dea Powe
Wyconda Lewis
Susan Butts
LaDedra Frazier
