Commitment to Diversity

I see journalism as a tool to amplify the voices often left out of societal conversations. Even in a state and school that can seemingly lack some elements of diverse demographics, I search for new voices and work to close the representational gaps that South Dakota can have. I am passionate about using this power to tell the vast stories these voices have to tell and further promote an inclusive atmosphere around LHS specifically. This includes a deep dive into the efforts of two LHS students who advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and spoke against South Dakota legislation that blocked gender-affirming care for minors throughout the state, which was published on the Best of SNO site, allowing their voices to be heard on a national stage.

Outside of features, I also merge diverse perspectives in news and opinion stories. This includes an opinion I wrote concerning the sexist responses coming from Artificial Intelligence as a result of a lack of female programmers. This way, I use my journalistic voice to report hidden lenses on larger issues in hopes of promoting nuanced thought among readers. Furthermore, as an Editor-in-Chief, I push staff members to use inclusive language and cover events that celebrate the vast stories Sioux Falls has to share. From Native American Day celebrations to the lack of local driving lessons for adult immigrants, I am proud of how the Statesman amplifies underrepresented community voices.
