For this assignment I had to detail how social media has affected society and myself.
The results from the "Am I addicted to social media" quiz stated "You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
I do know that I spend majority of my free time on social media and I would say that I am addicted to it but when I've had enough I have enough discipline to place my phone in a drawer or closet and leave it there for a few hours, I know that sound a bit extreme but that's what works for me.
The statistic that was most interesting to me, displays the use of online apps based on different demographics such as age, race, etc. Most of these demographics I fall in and some of these apps I use daily.
I think that social media has both a negative and positive impact on society. In today's world a lot of influence comes from social media and causes people to not be able to formulate their own thoughts but be dependent on the media to think for them. This can cause a lot of users to follow negativity and act on it. But then I think that social media is really informative and has a lot of resources that can help the world become a better place. For example, TikTok is used all over the world and gives people insight on how others are living, foreign laws, health suggestions and more. So overall I think that social media has the ability to be a negative and a positive impact on society depending on the individual and the purpose it's being used for.
I learned that my social media usage is worse than I thought by the taking the quiz and that need to practice more discernment and discipline when using it.
Use of online platforms, apps varies – sometimes widely – by demographic group. (2021, April 5). Pew Research Center. https://www.pewresearch.org/
