INFORMATION HERE IS ALIGNED WITH CURRENT DAVIDSON COUNTY SCHOOLS GUIDELINES. THIS INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
What are the best means of contact for the 4th/5th grade teachers?
Please reach out on Class Dojo with questions. Often, parent emails are sent to our spam. Please check student folders, agendas, binders, and bookbags before reaching out about missing work. Also, please check class dojo messages and class story posts before reaching out with questions. We do our best to send out information multiple times per week.
How do parents/guardians approach a change in transportation?
The following information is directly from the Reeds Elementary School website: All transportation changes must be in writing from the parent/guardian. Please do not email/dojo the classroom teacher for transportation changes. Transportation changes can be made by writing a note to your child’s teacher or by fax (336) 242-5691. Please include date, first and last name of your child, homeroom teacher’s name, any changes to be made, and your signature. Please include the address of the stop for the changes that involve the bus.
If you forget to send a note, you can call the front office. Transportation changes by phone will only be accepted by office administrators. These regulations are to protect our students, to be certain he/she leaves with those individuals you have given us permission to release them to, and to ensure that we know their location. We are required by law to keep these records for reporting attendance to the State Department of Public Instruction. NEVER take a student from the bus area or car rider area.
What is the price for breakfast and lunch (2025-2026 school year)?
Students will not have to pay for breakfast and lunch at Reeds during this school year. Extras (cookies, chips, etc.) will be additional fees.
How will my child know what is on the breakfast/lunch menu?
Links to both menus for elementary students can be found by clicking HERE.
What is the snack and drink policy for classrooms?
Students will have access to a water fountain but can bring their own water bottle each day. ONLY WATER is allowed in classrooms. Gatorade, flavored water packets, sodas, or anything that is not water is not allowed in the classroom. However, students may bring these items to lunch as long as they are finished with it or return it to their backpack at the end of the lunch period. Snack time is around 10:30 each morning. Students can bring a healthy, small snack. Large bags of chips or takis and jars of food are not allowed.
If my child is absent from school, what do I need to do?
Please be sure to send a written excuse with your child the day after his/her absence. We must have this for your records. If your child is to be absent for two or more days (planned), please let me know in advance and I can gather the make-up work for him/her. When the student returns to school, it is their responsibility to check their folder for their make-up work.
Please make every effort to keep your child in school all day. Late arrivals and early dismissals create missed instruction and learning for your child. It is important that he/she learns good habits of staying in school the full time and builds a strong foundation for future educational goals. Parents will be contacted if absences, tardies, and early dismissals accumulate to an excessive amount.
What is the tardy policy at Reeds Elementary School?
School begins at 8:00 a.m.! The school doors open at 7:30 a.m. and your child has the option to eat breakfast before going straight to class to complete their morning work. Please try to have students at school by 7:50 a.m. because students need time to put his/her things away, eat breakfast, and be ready to begin learning at 8:00. If your child arrives at school after the tardy bell, he/she will need to go by the office and be signed in by an adult before coming to the classroom. Ask office staff if you have any questions.
What information do I need to know about Homework?
*Students are responsible for writing their homework on their calendars*
In math, the students will have weekly homework. Don't stress because parents/guardians connected on dojo have access to the answer key to support learning at home. Also, students can come in during homework help time from 7:30-8:00 each morning if needed. This is a time to help the students, not penalize them. Reach out to Ms. Shoaf for math homework-related questions.
In science, students will be expected to study vocabulary flash cards every day. Reach out to Mrs. Carlson for science homework-related questions.
In reading, students will have weekly reading homework and will encourage and recommend nightly reading. Daily reading increases fluency and provides opportunities for comprehension practice. This is also a great time to spend reading to someone else and have meaningful conversations about the story. Reach out to Mrs. Owens for ELA homework-related questions.
In social studies, students will only have homework if they request more time to work on a project or complete unfinished classwork. Reach out to Mrs. Owens about incomplete social studies work that needs to be completed for homework.
Missing work will become homework. We give students ample time in class to work on assignments. If they are on the "missing work" list, they are expected to complete it for homework if they did not finish it by the due date.
Is there technology you'd recommend that can help support my child in self-directed learning?
Yes! Check out the Resources tab at the top of this website to help support your child. There are math, reading, social studies, and science links. I highly recommend 99 Math, I-Ready, XtraMath, and Word Wall, which students use in class. If you need more math support, you can create accounts on Zearn, Khan Academy, or Splash Learn. If you need more reading support, you can create an account on ReadWorks, ReadTheory, or StarFall. Also, students have access to Dreamscape, a virtual game that involves reading comprehension. Please reach out to me if you would like additional resources besides the ones listed.
Will student's take home their laptops?
Laptops will remain at the school unless inclement weather is predicted and a remote day is mandatory. In this instance, students will take home laptops and be expected to complete all online assignments and/or attend the LIVE meetings on the remote day. There is a technology fee for students. Students are responsible for paying for damages/losing a laptop/losing a charger. Contact the technology department with questions regarding laptops. https://www.davidson.k12.nc.us/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=800518&type=d&pREC_ID=1398185

How often will I be able to review student work?
Every other week, we will send home a "data binder" that has graded student work. This is a great time to sit down and review classwork with your student. All of their work for the quarter stays in the data binder and an adult signature is required to indicate work has been reviewed. Progress reports are sent home every 4-5 weeks within a quarter. Grades can be accessed at all times on Powerschool Parent Portal.
