Restart is a REED program that builds confidence in students who can read in L1 - but have little vocabulary. They can mostly decode the words but just don't know what they mean. In this 100 hour program, students will learn that they actually do have a base knowledge in English, though they may not think they do!
This program builds from what students do know and what they can do, building with low-tech, kinesthetic learning strategies, and is appropriate for all populations. They become familiar with cognates, sentence starters, basic adjectives and word order. There is a feedback task at the end of each session, that includes elements of SEL, By the end of this program, they will be reading texts that contain the words they have learnt.
This site contains links to flashcards, notebooks and teacher's guides with instructions. Note that materials must be printed in color before you begin.
Once your students have mastered Restart, they are ready for the next step! REED Summer School is a fun. skills-based active learning experience, designed for students who need to strengthen their 4 English skills. They each can take up to 10 days to complete. Choose what is good for you.
The Summer School level 1 can be used at the beginning of 7th grade in main stream schools, or for other groups of students as appropriate.
The Summer School level 2 is on a slightly higher level. The students need to be more independent to complete the activities. We recommend using it between 7th and 8th grades, or for other groups as appropriate
