My name is Hannah Beck and I have played club soccer for years. While traveling to games and practices I began to notice all the trash piled up on the streets and freeways, and I started to think about how I could make an impact. For my Girl Scout Gold Award I focused on recycling. I planed a beach clean up in my local community and had members of my high school participate, together we gathered over ten bags of trash! I then cleaned the trash and sorted it into piles, plastic pieces, bottle caps, and cups/straws. The I took the trash to FDR Elementary where I taught three classes on the harmful effects of trash build up on the environment. The kids then made an art collage out of the trash to act as a lasting reminder of what they learned that day.
I also taught classes at the reDiscover Center, an organization that allows kids to be creative and create inventions using recycle materials, raw materials , and even teaches them how to use power tools. the reDiscover center is located in Venice and Jonathan Bijur was my project advisor. For the additional classes I taught at the reDiscover Center and Castle Heights Elementary I did not have enough materials to make art collages so instead we made flowers from plastic water bottles. Also a creative project that focused on recycling and helping the environment, the kids made many colorful flowers that will never die!
These are pictures of the examples I made for the kids
