Events coming soon!
Trash in our communities has become so common that sometimes we don’t even notice the broken bottles, paper plates, and plastic bags laying around. It’s not exactly ignorance but a sense of normalcy. One thing we learned through our trash pickup event is that you never notice problems around you, unless you really look for it, which is a theme we brought into our organization. We noticed that the amount of trash in our neighborhood, got so excessive that we decided we had to do something about it. For our first event, we decided to pick up trash in our community. It was a 4 hour event with two groups. We had a lot of fun at the event while also working to make the environment cleaner. A lot of people asked how they could help out, and someone even donated to our cause! This act of kindness helped kickstart Redmond VolunTEENs!
The COVID-19 pandemic changed a lot of things around the world and it impacted Redmond in a big way as Washington was the first state to get a case of the virus. Covid-19 caused many people to not be in touch with their family, especially elderly people in retirement homes and first responders. We wanted to bring some love into their life for Valentine’s Day so we collaborated with: Fairiwinds Retirement home, Overlake Terrace Retirement Home, and Seattle Children’s Hospitals for this event. We asked people in our community to write “Virtual Valentines” which we then compiled and sent out! We collected 32 cards in total and this event was a success! We later were informed that these letters brightened up the receivers days, and that was amazing to hear!
It is important to support people to be themselves. For our June/July event, we collaborated with an organization called Point of Pride, which helps transitioning transgender people to be who they are. We had an event where people could come write letters to show their support! People came to write letters as well as deliver prewritten letters to our booth in Bristol Park. We later then mailed the letters to Point of Pride who gave our letters to people who deserve them! We collected and received 30+ letters from the people who participated in our event! A friend of ours, Raneet Hans also came to show her support by selling her designed pride-related vinyl stickers at our booth! Thank you to all that participated!
When we were in meetings planning events with the board and committees of Redmond VolunTEENs, we realized that most of our ideas had extra costs. So for our August event, we decided to host a fundraiser! We participated in the Youth4Us Business Fair, where we sold bubble tea and other baked goods. People got volunteering hours from helping us make the tea and baked goods or helping manning/setting up the booth. It was a really fun experience for volunteers and us and in total, we raised more than a 100 dollars! We hope to do more fundraisers like this in the future so we can have money to make our events happen! Thank you so much for those who came to our boba and bake sale booth and we hope to see you again at future events!
It is holiday season! The lights, the festivals, the food, the holidays are the best time of year! But for some, they aren't the best part of the year. So, to spread holiday cheer, we decided to start a holiday card drive, which is going to happen annually for here on out! We asked for people to send out online cards and we complied them and sent them out to various homeless shelters in our area. We got so many responses, so thank you all for spreading the happiness and participating in our holiday drive! See you next year and happy holidays!!!
