aA marketing manager signing into their Google Ads account today in Dubai will be faced with something that was totally alien five years ago: bids are already set, budgets automatically reallocate themselves overnight, and almost half of the headlines were created by the system rather than by a copywriter. The change has not come overnight. More than half of all active campaigns are governed by automated bidding, and Performance Max, a relatively recent addition to Google's portfolio that did not even exist a few years ago, is becoming the new default entry point for all advertisers. Even the results announced recently by Alphabet's own quarterly report are speaking for themselves. Google's advertising unit ended 2025 on record-high growth, and the logic of this development can only be explained by the increasing number of elements that now run autonomously. The next logical question then would be the following. What if the bidding process is fully automated, as well as placement choices and even copywriting – then what is left to optimize?
Plenty of things, as it turns out. Automation takes care of execution, but it cannot replace the human ability to analyze the situation and structure the optimization goals. Every meaningful optimization effort will be split between two types of factors. First of all, there are the external factors. These include competition on the UAE market, holiday season, such as Ramadan or Dubai Shopping Festival, and changes made by Google to its display algorithm. And, secondly, there are internal factors: structure of the account, quality of its creatives and clearly stated goals, regardless of the fact whether any kind of automation has been used yet or not. Currently, those agencies and in-house teams which manage to combine the analytical approach with the storytelling skills are taking the lead. Below are ten techniques used by them.
Automated bidding is only as efficient as the conversion signal it is learning from. The results of the advertisers using Smart Bidding without proper conversion tracking confirmed the statement made by Google itself: the volatility of their results is significantly higher than of others. When turning an account into Maximize Conversions or Target ROAS mode, make sure to first define what is considered as a conversion, assign it the value based on actual revenue rather than leads count and give the algorithm at least two to three weeks to learn the data. This is an intrinsic factor fully under advertiser's control, and it is the most common source of problems with automated bidding.
Optimization efforts directed at Performance Max optimization work depending on the initial signals provided to the system. Without any kind of guidance, the campaign type will have to broadly explore possible variations and spend the budget to do that. Feeding it with the customer lists, defining the custom audience segments based on users' searches and creating asset groups with clear structure will help the algorithm to hit the ground running. Usage rate of Performance Max grew from 60% in 2024 to 71% in 2025, and the difference between campaigns seeded with intent and the rest is precisely where the agency's fee is earned nowadays.
Search campaign optimization was used to consist of pursuing high-volume keywords before. However, the search engine itself is now more likely to interpret broad and phrase keywords by their meaning and match them accordingly. Breaking down a Dubai based service business into clusters like “ready to book”, “comparing options” and “researching” and creating unique ad copy for each keeps automated bidding focused on relevant traffic and does not dilute the average CTR of the campaign with irrelevant searches.
Letting the algorithm figure out how to optimize its bidding for relevant traffic takes longer and costs more money than uploading the actual target data to it. Customer match lists, website visitors' segments, and CRM database imported into an account is one of the ways to speed up the process of optimizing both Search campaigns and Performance Max campaigns. This is one of the few places where analytical and human side of a business intersect in Google Ads – the data itself is purely technical, however, deciding on which customer segments to target is a matter of a human judgment.
Responsive Search Ads produce significantly better conversion rate than static, fixed text ads, and campaigns that use at least three ad extensions experience noticeable increase in click through rate. Automation cannot help bad headlines or lack of sitelinks; all it can do is bid better for whatever creative it was given. Creating headlines that highlight a goal of the searcher over a name of the product, and refreshing them quarterly still remains a manual craft that has not been picked up yet by the machines.
Any automated system was designed to allocate budget efficiently to reach the stated goal, however, it is perfectly willing to spend budget on traffic that produces conversions, but does nothing for the business. Negative keywords, exclusions for placements inside Performance Max campaigns, and exclusion of current customers from audiences for acquisition campaigns are some examples of guardrails that help automated bidding to stay within the limits of relevancy. Monthly reviews of such parameters catch drift that any account running on automatic settings develops over time.
Generic campaigns seldom produce as good results in the UAE as localized ones. Google Ads Dubai campaigns need bilingual ad copy (Arabic and English), modified schedules according to the local schedule and prayer time, and more flexible budget allocation around known demand spikes like Ramadan, Dubai Shopping Festival and back to school season in September. Those are extrinsic factors that the advertiser cannot influence and needs to take into account in advance; in the Gulf region those factors play a particularly important role.
Google's default reporting view is built to reassure, not to diagnose. A weekly look at search term reports, auction insights and impression share lost to budget or rank surfaces problems long before a monthly summary would. Search impression share lost to rank, in particular, is an early signal that automated bidding is being outcompeted rather than simply underfunded, and the two require very different fixes.
However, experienced marketers often combine the use of Performance Max with Search and Shopping campaigns separately, since Performance Max may stagnate on generating new clients. It is useful to have Search campaigns in addition to Performance Max in order to keep a company’s Google paid search activities robust in case one type of campaign fails to produce good results in a particular month.
Roughly 40 percent of small and mid sized businesses currently invest in search advertising at all, which leaves a large share of the market managing accounts without dedicated attention. A Google Ads management company earns its keep precisely where the nine techniques above intersect: someone has to audit conversion tracking, seed audience signals, write and refresh creative, and read account health every week, all while watching for shifts specific to the Dubai and wider GCC market. Automation compresses the time it takes to execute a campaign. It has not compressed the judgment required to point that execution in the right direction, and that gap is where a specialized partner still earns its place.
None of this argues against automated bidding or Performance Max, both of which now form the backbone of how Google Ads actually works. It argues for treating automation as a highly capable executor that still needs direction, and for recognizing that the direction comes from a mix of analytical discipline and a genuine feel for the customer on the other end of the search. The advertisers still winning in 2026 are not the ones fighting the algorithm. They are the ones feeding it well.
