Larry was born in North Dakota in 1927. He was an air force test pilot. He had a wife and two sons and what seemed like a perfect life as an American Hero and patriot, although he never liked to have the term "hero" placed on him. But he had a secret: he had to hide the fact that he was gay in a very homophobic time period. He had a lover, John Bowers, who was a mechanic who worked on Larry's planes. They were in love but the secrecy was difficult on their relationship. Larry was so close to being accepted on the Mercury Mission when during one of his flights he had an encounter with the Negative Spirit. In this incident, the Negative Spirit merged with him and caused the ship to crash. Larry was left with burn scars covering his entire body. In addition to this, Larry was possessed by the Negative Spirit. Larry also permanently gives off radiation that kills anyone any of his bare skin is exposed to. Over the next several years, Larry was tortured and experimented on by the Bureau of Normalcy.
After a while, he ends up with a man named Niles Caulder, who is the one who gave Larry the radiation-proof bandages that allow him to have somewhat distanced contact with people. He lived in Niles' estate, called Doom Manor, with a group of metahumans helped by Niles Caulder, although it turns out Niles was also the one responsible for most of their "accidents" as well, but they don't find that out until much later.
This group of misfits are far from a team of superheroes. They all have varying types of trauma that makes it difficult for any of them to get anything done. Most of the time when they save people, it is from a disaster they caused in the first place. Despite this, as more superhuman and/or nonhuman things happen around them, they are forced to attempt to put their "super" skills to use and work as a team to save themselves and the people around them, and most of the time they stumble through it rather successfully.
Eleanor Poole was a talented young doctor, trusted immensely by Niles Caulder to handle the bizarre medical needs of those in his charge. Specifically, she was to look after Larry Trainor, a dangerously radioactive man whose encounter with an alien energy being changed his body on a molecular level, and made medical treatment on him difficult due to his changed biochemistry and the radiation interfering with most medical equipment that would be used to examine him.
Despite this, he had unique medical needs. During the time she was watching over him exclusively, he was separated from that alien symbiote he had previously been merged with and recovering from this traumatic separation. It wasn't easy on his body, as this was the first time he had been separated from it since the crash for longer than 60 seconds. Despite still having the meta-gene, this separation from the negative spirit made Larry almost normal.
In addition to her work as a doctor working with metahumans, she had a fiance named Dan, and a fascination with Russian stacking dolls that she collected. Although she loved her fiance, sometimes her hours as a doctor and dedication to her field would be hard on their relationship.
Mercurius was a negative energy being from the Negative Nebula that had been merged with air force test pilot Larry Trainor after Trainor's plane crashed into it in the Earth's stratosphere. For a long time, Mercurius's personality was suppressed by Larry's. Larry's consciousness would attach itself to Mercurius's spirit when released from his body, which caused Larry to believe Mercurius was a part of him, his own consciousness projected out of his body, and not a separate being altogether. Eventually Mercurius gained its strength back, and made itself known as an entity separate from Larry Trainor.
There was a time when Larry and Mercurius were separated, but Mercurius found its way back to Larry again, when he was under the care of Dr. Eleanor Poole. Mercurius wanted to merge with Larry again, but it wanted to do more than just that. It believed humanity was incomplete separated into male and female, and that the ideal form would be the combination of the two. So it merged itself with Larry and his doctor, Eleanor Poole, and Rebis was born. Rebis is hir own individual, separate from all hir composite parts. Although Mercurius's vision for Rebis was to create something superior, Rebis does not see themselves that way, as their fragmented composite parts can sometimes be difficult to reconcile with each other.
Rebis explained to Dan, Eleanor's fiance, what happened, and he did not take it very well, understandably upset that his fiancee was essentially dead. Rebis then took Larry's place as a member of the Doom Patrol. In this position, it is sometimes hard to separate their association with Larry Trainor, and Cliff in particular continues to call hir by Larry's name. It doesn't correct him most of the time, although they continue to call hirself Rebis. Rebis had their own room in Doom Manor, although zie did not furnish it, and spent most of hir time unpacking and repacking the Russian nesting dolls alone in the dark and talking to hirself.
This version of Rebis take place not long after they were reborn through the Aenigma Regis, a process where they gave birth to hirself after a meditation process on the moon, laying an egg that would hatch hir new body when their original body was destroyed by the Candlemaker.
" Now that zie's back from that soul vacation / Tracing hir way through the constellation, hey, hey
Zie checks out Mozart while zie does Tae-Bo / Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey, yeah.
Now that zie's back in the atmosphere / I'm afraid that zie might think of me as
Plain ol' Jane, told a story about a man Who is too afraid to fly so he never did land."
