In political science and U.S. politics introductory courses, my goal is to help students from all academic backgrounds see the relevance of political science in their academic, civic, and personal lives. I thoroughly enjoy introducing them to the enduring debates about the distribution of power, justice and legitimacy in society. My experience includes teaching Introduction to Political Science online and in-person. For my in-person teaching, I was recognized on the Illinois "List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by their Students".
In political behavior seminars, my goal is for students to learn about, critique and participate in the scientific research of mass political behavior and attitudes. My training and research have prepared me to develop courses like political behavior, political psychology, public opinion, and racial and ethnic politics, with a primary focus on the U.S. My experience includes being the instructor of record for an online course on U.S. Racial and Ethnic Politics and assisting faculty in the development of the instructional content and subsequent revisions.
As a research instructor and mentor, I aim to empower students with the analytical skills and confidence they need to pursue questions they care about. I have taught approximately 90 students learning basic statistics in R (Introduction to Political Research) or conducting qualitative or quantitative research for their honors thesis (Senior Honors Seminar), and mentored two reserach assistants. My teaching in Introduction to Political Research received an outstanding rating on the Illinois "List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by their Students" (top 10% of instructors).
Student in Introduction to Political Research:
"[T]his class really challenged me and I struggled at first, but I grew to love it and looked forward to it every week. Discussion every Friday was a tremendous help, and this course gave me an entirely new perspective on our political climate and its relationships. Part of me wishes this class was longer than a semester!"
Student in Introduction to Political Science:
"She is an extremely nice person, I learned a lot from her during office hours. She did not only answer my class-related questions, but also answered my general questions regarding politics and gave me some academic advice."
Student in Senior Honors Seminar:
"Rebeca was INCREDIBLE. She was always patient, understanding, and genuinely helpful. All of her feedback showed that she put in tons of effort into helping students succeed."
Student in Senior Honors Seminar:
"I often worked with her individually. An especially helpful session with Rebeca was she helped me think through the theory section of my paper. Like any good professor, she allowed me to lead the discussion, but corrected me when my theory didn't make sense and provided me tips on how to make it better."
